In Manipur, a state in northeastern India, officials have imposed a curfew in the districts of Imphal West and Imphal East due to recent violent outbreaks. The trouble started after the tragic discovery of six people who were allegedly abducted and killed by militants in Jiribam.
In response to the violence, the government has also stopped internet services in several districts including Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur to help control the situation.
The unrest led to large mobs attacking the homes of some local politicians and causing destruction. As a result, the Manipur government has reached out to the Ministry of Home Affairs with a request to remove the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, known as AFSPA, from certain areas.
This act had been put back in place just days before, following new incidents of violence. The local Cabinet hopes that removing the AFSPA might help calm the ongoing turmoil, which has been affecting the region since May 2023.
