A church service in Michigan turned tragic on Sunday morning when a man attacked with a gun, leaving one person dead and nine others hurt. Police said the suspect, a 40-year-old man, drove his car through the front doors of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, about 60 miles from Detroit.
After crashing inside, he began shooting with what police described as an assault rifle. Officers shot and killed the attacker at the scene.
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said the suspect also set fire to the church, which was later seen burning in photos and videos online. He explained that more victims may still be found inside who could not get out because of the flames.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said her heart was breaking for the Grand Blanc community, calling violence in places of worship “unacceptable.” Former President Donald Trump also reacted, saying the attack seemed like a targeted act against Christians and promised FBI support.
Church spokesperson Doug Andersen described the event as a “tragic act of violence.” Police are still investigating the motive and plan to search the suspect’s home and phone records.
