Chicago – January 03, 2025

House Speaker Mike Johnson secured his position for another term on Friday after a close vote, winning by just three votes. Now, he faces the tough job of bringing together a divided group of Republican lawmakers who are eager to push forward with President-elect Donald Trump’s plans when he returns to the White House later this month.

The final vote, which was 218-215-1, highlights the challenges ahead for Congress. Republicans are about to take control of all the major decision-making power in Washington, but their internal disagreements could cause problems.

Trump’s influence will likely be a key factor in guiding their decisions.

Johnson was able to win the speakership with support from almost all House Republicans. The only exception was Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky, who had already promised not to vote for him.

Initially, Reps. Ralph Norman from South Carolina and Keith Self from Texas also voted for someone else. However, they changed their votes after speaking with Trump on the phone and after meeting with Johnson in person.
