In April 2024, during a rally in Rajasthan, India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made comments that upset many people. He suggested that the Indian National Congress, if elected, would give the country’s wealth to “infiltrators” and people who have many children, hinting at the Muslim community.
Prime Minister Modi claimed that when Congress was in power, they said Muslims should get the first claim on resources. He questioned the crowd if they were okay with their money going to “infiltrators.”
These remarks led to a lot of criticism from the opposition and members of the Muslim community. The opposition, which has often accused Modi and his party, the BJP, of stirring division, asked the Election Commission of India to check if Modi’s words broke their rules. This controversy comes at a time when fears are growing that another term for the BJP could increase tensions among different community groups in India.
