Chicago – January 17, 2025

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced on Friday that Lt. Gov. Jon Husted will fill the Senate seat left vacant by Vice President-elect JD Vance. The announcement was made during a press conference in Ohio, ahead of Vance’s inauguration on Monday.

Husted, who has served as lieutenant governor since 2018 and was re-elected in 2022, brings extensive experience to the role. He previously served as Ohio secretary of state, speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, and as an Ohio state senator.

During the press conference, Husted accepted the appointment, saying he is ready to step into the new role. Vance had officially resigned from the Senate on January 10, following his notice of resignation on January 9. His resignation came 10 days before his upcoming swearing-in as vice president.

Senator Tim Scott, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, congratulated Husted on his new position. A special election will be held in November 2026 to decide who will complete the remainder of Vance’s Senate term.
