Chicago – January 17, 2025
President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration will take place inside the U.S. Capitol on Monday because of extremely cold weather, marking the first indoor ceremony since President Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration in 1985. Back then, temperatures were a frigid 7 degrees, with a dangerous windchill of -40.
Monday’s forecast predicts a high of 23 degrees and a low of 10, but strong winds are expected to make it feel much colder, like single digits. Trump shared the weather concerns on Truth Social, noting, “The windchill could bring temperatures to record lows.”
He emphasized safety, saying he doesn’t want anyone, including law enforcement, first responders, and supporters, to be at risk from the freezing conditions. He also reminded everyone to “dress warmly” if they plan to attend.
The U.S. Capitol has been used for indoor inaugurations before, including President Thomas Jefferson’s in 1801. The tradition of outdoor ceremonies began with President James Monroe, whose inauguration was held outside because the Capitol was damaged after the War of 1812.
For those still planning to participate, Trump announced that D.C.’s Capital One Arena will be open for live viewing of the inauguration and hosting the Presidential Parade.
