President Trump visited Florida on Tuesday to see a new migrant detention center, called “Alligator Alcatraz,” located in the Everglades. Officials say the center will soon begin housing detainees.
Joined by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Trump toured the facility, which was quickly set up after receiving federal approval just last week. The center includes rows of bunk beds surrounded by fences and razor wire.
Trump praised the facility, saying, “It’s really government working together,” after seeing how it was organized. The center is located at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, a remote 39-square-mile airstrip in the Big Cypress National Preserve, near Everglades National Park.
DeSantis mentioned that the first group of arrivals is expected on Wednesday, following a security sweep, with Noem saying it could happen within 24 hours.
