On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition, criticized the BJP for claiming to protect the Constitution while, according to him, defaming it. He pointed out that Hindutva leader V.D. Savarkar had once called the Constitution “un-Indian.” He argued that the BJP was ridiculing its own “supreme leader” by using the Constitution as a shield while attacking it.
Gandhi also accused the BJP and the RSS of supporting the Manusmriti, an ancient text, and said the Constitution should govern India.
He further compared the situation to the story of Eklavya, who had to sacrifice his thumb as ‘Guru Dakshina’ to Dronacharya. Gandhi claimed that the BJP was, metaphorically, “chopping off the thumb” of the poor, youth, and farmers by creating monopolies for the Adani Group, implementing the Agnipath scheme, and allowing things like paper leaks and police action against farmers.
Reiterating his commitment to the people, Gandhi promised that a caste census would be carried out and the 50% cap on reservations would be removed for a “new type of development” in the country.
