Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has criticized the Uttar Pradesh government’s compensation for victims of the Hathras stampede as “very inadequate.” He wrote to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asking for higher compensation.
Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP from Rae Bareli, visited Hathras and Aligarh last week. He met the families of the victims of the July 2 stampede at a religious gathering where 121 people, mostly women, died.
After the incident, the UP government announced Rs 2 lakh for each family of those who died and Rs 50,000 for the injured. In his letter, Rahul mentioned that he struggled to console the grieving families.
“The death of over 120 people in a stampede in Hathras has left me shocked. I am writing this letter with a lot of pain in my heart, and I know you must feel the same,” Rahul wrote to Adityanath.
He also urged the chief minister to provide adequate compensation to the injured and cover their medical expenses.
