Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced he was suspending his independent bid for the U.S. presidency and will now support Donald Trump’s campaign. Kennedy, 70, a Democrat for most of his life and comes from the famous Kennedy family, said his decision was driven by the same principles that made him leave the party. Although he’s stepping back, Kennedy said in a press conference in Arizona that he will keep his name on the ballot in states where it won’t affect the race.
Trump, the Republican candidate, welcomed the endorsement, calling Kennedy “a great guy.” Meanwhile, Democratic rival Kamala Harris promised to work hard to win over Kennedy’s supporters. Kennedy’s campaign, known for his anti-vaccine stance and strange stories, had lost steam as his polling numbers and media attention dropped.
Kennedy’s family, including his sister Kerry, expressed disappointment, calling his support for Trump a “betrayal” of their family’s values. Democrats dismissed the endorsement, saying Trump is merely taking on the baggage of a “failed fringe candidate.”
