A federal jury in Fort Pierce, Florida, convicted Ryan Wesley Routh, 59, on all charges related to the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump. The incident took place last year at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach during his presidential campaign.
Routh faced five counts, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, possession of a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Although Routh did not fire his rifle, prosecutors argued he demonstrated clear intent to kill Trump, supported by extensive evidence including surveillance, phone records, and testimony from 38 witnesses over a nearly three-week trial. The jury deliberated for under three hours before delivering the guilty verdict.
Following the verdict, Routh attempted to stab himself with a pen in the courtroom but was quickly restrained. His sentencing is scheduled for December 18, where he could face life imprisonment.
President Trump praised law enforcement and DOJ officials for their efforts in securing the conviction. The case underscores the government’s commitment to punishing political violence and protecting democratic processes.
