Chicago – November 11, 2024
President-elect Donald Trump announced on Monday that he has chosen former New York Congressman Lee Zeldin to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of forming his new administration. Zeldin, a Republican, ran unsuccessfully for governor of New York in 2022.
In his new role, he aims to speed up deregulatory decisions to boost American businesses while maintaining high environmental standards, including clean air and water.
Trump highlighted these goals in a recent statement. Zeldin was known for voting against certifying the 2020 election results and during his eight years in Congress, he did not work on committees that deal with environmental issues. He has a 14% approval rating from the League of Conservation Voters, an environmental group.
Additionally, Trump has appointed Stephen Miller, a key advisor from his previous term, as deputy chief of policy. Miller has been influential in shaping Trump’s tough immigration policies.
Trump also named New York Representative Elise Stefanik as his pick for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Since leaving the White House, Miller has led America First Legal, an organization that challenges policies from the Biden administration and other entities on issues such as free speech and national security.
