Chicago – May 04, 2025
Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, recently denied that he is planning to run for a third term. In an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump, who is 78 years old, said, “I’ll be an eight-year president, I’ll be a two-term president. I always thought that was very important.”
Although Trump has previously joked about wanting to serve a third or even fourth term, he later explained that his comments were meant to poke fun at the media. Some of his supporters have speculated that he could run again after his second term ends in January 2029, partly due to the sale of “Trump 2028” hats by his company, The Trump Organization.
Trump clarified that he has received requests from people asking him to stay in office longer, but emphasized that he does not intend to do so. He mentioned other Republicans, like Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as possible candidates who could take his place.
The U.S. Constitution limits presidents to two terms in office, according to the 22nd Amendment, which says no one can be elected president more than twice. Changing this rule would require a two-thirds majority vote in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as approval from three-quarters of the state governments.
Despite this, some Trump supporters believe there could be a loophole in the Constitution, though it has never been tested in court.
