Chicago – June 16, 2025

President Donald Trump has decided not to sign a joint statement calling for de-escalation between Israel and Iran, which was drafted by G7 leaders in Canada. This move creates a division with other world leaders as the summit begins.

The statement, led by European officials, emphasizes Israel’s right to defend itself and stresses that Iran should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.

Ahead of the summit, talks were still happening among G7 representatives to finalize the language of the statement. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, were working to reach an agreement on the issue with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

However, Trump, who has been critical of multilateral organizations like the G7, decided not to sign the statement for now, preventing a united stance from the world’s leading democracies on the Middle East crisis.
