The Biden administration has decided to allow a shipment of 500-pound bombs to Israel, a US official said. This comes after the shipment was paused over two months ago. The original decision to stop the shipment of both 2,000-pound and 500-pound bombs was due to concerns about Israel using the heavier 2,000-pound bombs in their Rafah operation.
One shipment of 2,000-pound bombs is still on hold. The Wall Street Journal first reported the approval of the 500-pound bomb shipment.
President Joe Biden, in a CNN interview, mentioned that civilians in Gaza have been killed because of the 2,000-pound bombs and other attacks on population centers. This statement came shortly after the pause was put in place.
The US was not worried about the 500-pound bombs being used in densely populated areas, but since shipments include different types of munitions, both kinds were held up, the official explained.
