The Pentagon is pressing U.S. defense contractors to rapidly increase weapons production as the ongoing war with Iran strains American military stockpiles. Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg has given defense companies 21 days to submit plans for faster deliveries and expanded production of critical weapons.
In a memo to industry leaders, Feinberg warned that years-long development and production schedules are no longer acceptable, calling for an immediate expansion of manufacturing capacity. The push reflects growing concerns inside the Defense Department about shortages of key munitions after months of sustained combat operations.
The weapons shortage has also created tensions between the White House and the Pentagon, while defense experts say some problems may persist until Congress approves additional military spending.
The effort highlights a broader challenge for the U.S. military: rebuilding depleted inventories while maintaining its ability to respond to threats in the Middle East and other regions.
