The United States and Iran have started new talks to try to reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. The meeting took place on Saturday in Muscat, the capital of Oman, and lasted over two hours. Oman helped mediate the talks, acting as a go-between for both countries.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, said that the two sides discussed Iran’s nuclear program and the possibility of lifting the sanctions placed on Iran. However, he did not share many details about what was said during the talks. At the end of the meeting, Araghchi mentioned that he and Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s Middle East envoy, spoke briefly.
Although the Iranians called this an “indirect” meeting, the Trump administration described it as “direct negotiations.” Araghchi’s statement suggested that both sides agreed on how to handle the talks. The U.S. did not make an immediate comment, and it is unclear when or where the two sides will meet again next week.
