Chicago – June 07, 2025

Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a man from Maryland, has been brought back to the United States after being mistakenly deported to El Salvador. This comes after a long and complicated legal battle. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced his return and the charges against him during a press conference at the Department of Justice.

Bondi praised Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele for agreeing to send Abrego Garcia back to the U.S. to face criminal charges. She said this was an example of “American justice.”

Abrego Garcia was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 21 in Tennessee. He is accused of being part of a conspiracy to smuggle thousands of migrants into the U.S. from Texas over a period of time, from 2016 to 2025. The charges against him include “conspiracy to unlawfully transport illegal aliens for financial gain” and “unlawful transportation of illegal aliens for financial gain.”

If Abrego Garcia is found guilty, he will face time in a U.S. prison before being deported back to El Salvador.

However, Abrego Garcia’s lawyer, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, says they will continue to fight for a fair trial. He believes that Abrego Garcia is being brought back to the U.S. not to correct a mistake, but to prosecute him, and he thinks the situation has been unfair from the beginning.
