Trump’s Travel Ban: Uncertainty for Afghans
President Donald Trump’s recent travel ban has left many Afghans feeling uncertain and betrayed. The ban restricts travel to the US for citizens of 12 countries, including Afghanistan. While there are some exceptions, many Afghans who helped the US during its nearly two-decade-long war in Afghanistan may not qualify.

Impact on Afghans
The travel ban affects various immigration pathways for Afghans, including:

  • Refugee Status: Resettlement efforts have been almost completely shut down.
  • Temporary Protected Status: Afghans living in the US under this status may have to leave.
  • Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs): While exempt from the ban, many Afghans who worked with the US may not meet the one-year employment requirement or qualify due to other restrictions.

Concerns and Criticisms
Advocates argue that the SIV exception doesn’t help many Afghans who risked their lives to support the US. The administration’s cuts and policy changes further complicate the process. For example, the Office of the Coordinator for Afghan Relocation Efforts is being dismantled by July 1, making it harder for Afghans to seek help.

Critics, including aid and refugee resettlement groups, denounce the ban, saying it’s not about national security but rather “sowing division and vilifying communities seeking safety and opportunity in the US,” as stated by Abby Maxman, president of Oxfam America.
