Chicago – June 14, 2025
A gunman pretending to be a police officer killed a senior Democratic state assemblywoman and her husband on Saturday in what officials believe was a politically motivated attack. The gunman also injured another lawmaker and their spouse. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and law enforcement officials confirmed the incident.
Authorities have launched a major search for the suspect, with help from the FBI. The gunman fled on foot after firing at police and leaving behind a vehicle. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered a “manifesto” and a list of other lawmakers and officials, including abortion rights supporters and Democratic leaders from Minnesota and other states.
The victims were Melissa Hortman, a former assembly speaker, and her husband, Mark. The tragic killings have shocked both Republican and Democratic politicians across the country.
Many are calling for less harmful political language. Investigators have identified the suspected shooter and believe he is nearby, within three miles of the crime scene. The FBI and state law enforcement are prepared to assist in the search for the suspect.
