Chicago – August 18, 2026
Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered that jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within 48 hours for medical examination and treatment, following growing concerns over his health.
A three-member bench directed authorities to establish a medical board to supervise the 73-year-old’s care. The panel is expected to include specialists, Khan’s personal physician and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan. An eye specialist will also assess reported problems with his vision.
The court further ordered that Khan be allowed weekly meetings with family members and telephone contact with his sons, who live abroad. According to his lawyers, he has experienced fluctuating blood pressure, anxiety and severe deterioration in eyesight while being held at Adiala Jail.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has repeatedly demanded specialist treatment and greater access to family and personal doctors. The ruling came after a jail report detailed medical concerns and followed intense public pressure.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 in corruption-related cases, which he and his party describe as politically motivated. The government has not yet publicly commented on the order.
