Zohran Mamdani declared victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday night after Andrew Cuomo conceded the race, marking a surprising upset.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and state assembly member, ran a strong campaign focused on the high cost of living and quickly built a big lead over Cuomo, the former governor who was trying to make a political comeback after a sexual harassment scandal. Although the final results will be confirmed through ranked-choice voting, Mamdani’s lead was clear just hours after the polls closed.
Mamdani told his supporters, “I will be your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City,” and promised to be a mayor for all New Yorkers, including those who voted for Cuomo or did not vote at all. Cuomo, who had been the front-runner early in the race, congratulated Mamdani and said, “Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won.”
If elected, Mamdani would become New York City’s first Muslim and Indian American mayor, making history in the nation’s largest city. The current mayor, Eric Adams, did not participate in the Democratic primary and is running as an independent in the general election. Cuomo also has the option to run in the general election
