Chicago – June 29, 2025

Republican Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina announced on Sunday that he will not run for reelection next year. His decision came one day after he publicly opposed President Donald Trump’s tax plan, which included cuts to healthcare programs.

Tillis’ choice opens up a new opportunity for Democrats in the 2026 midterm elections, creating a competitive Senate race in a state that has been a political battleground for years. It also places Tillis in a tricky position within the Republican Party, where many lawmakers are hesitant to challenge Trump. Trump had already hinted at supporting a primary challenger against Tillis.

In a statement, Tillis said he was proud of his public service but noted that it is getting harder for leaders to work across party lines and think independently in today’s political climate.

Tillis, who was up for a third term, is stepping down in a Senate where Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority. Trump had criticized Tillis for being one of two Republican senators who voted against the tax bill the previous Saturday.
