Chicago – July 01, 2025

On Monday, the Trump administration informed states that it would be withholding more than $6 billion in federal education grants that had already been approved. This news came just one day before the usual deadline of July 1 when the funds are typically sent out, and it may affect how schools plan for the fall.

In messages sent to state education leaders, the U.S. Education Department explained that because of the change in administration, the department is reviewing the funding for the 2025 school year. They said decisions on the grants have not been made yet and that no funds would be distributed until the review is complete.

The grants under review support various school programs, such as migrant education, after-school services, and support for English language learners. The largest portion of the money, about $2.2 billion, goes toward professional development for teachers. School districts often use this funding for teacher training to help improve their skills.

This isn’t the first time the Trump administration has targeted these programs. The proposed 2026 budget aimed to cut all five of the grant programs now being reviewed.
