Chicago Braces for Impact of Medicaid and SNAP Cuts
Chicago’s food pantries, community hospitals, and low-income families are preparing for severe hardship due to proposed federal budget cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). If implemented, these cuts would slash Medicaid by $1 trillion over 10 years, potentially leaving 330,000 Illinoisans without Medicaid coverage. SNAP cuts would further exacerbate the issue, putting 427,000 people at risk of losing food assistance.
Consequences for Chicago Residents
The impact would be devastating for many Chicago residents. Over 1.3 million residents rely on Medicaid, and nearly 700,000 depend on SNAP. Food pantries are already stretched thin, serving 2.4 million households last fiscal year. With the proposed cuts, lines at food pantries are expected to grow longer. Safety-net hospitals like Cook County Health fear massive funding losses, threatening services for uninsured patients.
Preparing for the Worst
Community organizers and healthcare professionals are mobilizing to push back against these cuts. “We’re preparing for the worst,” said Dr. The cuts would be devastating,” said Kate Maehr, CEO of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. As lawmakers consider these budget cuts, the fate of millions of Americans hangs in the balance.
