A man from North Korea crossed the heavily guarded border between North and South Korea and is now in South Korean custody, the South’s military said on Friday.

The South Korean military said they noticed the man near the central-west section of the border and tracked him down. They carried out an operation and took him into custody Thursday night.

South Korean authorities are investigating why the man crossed the border. They did not say if he was trying to defect to South Korea.

The military informed the United Nations Command, led by the U.S., about the situation. They also said there were no signs of unusual military activity from North Korea.

The South Korean military team approached the unarmed man, introduced themselves as South Korean troops, and safely guided him out of the mine-filled Demilitarized Zone, the area separating the two countries.

Tensions along the border have been high recently, with both North and South Korea sending messages against each other, including North Korea sending balloons filled with trash and South Korea broadcasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda.
