Chicago – July 12, 2025

On Saturday, former President Donald Trump announced that he will impose a 30% tariff on goods from the European Union and Mexico, starting on August 1. This move could create major problems in the trade relationships between the United States and two of its biggest partners.

Trump shared the news in letters posted on his social media accounts, as part of a larger plan to introduce new tariffs. This plan is an important part of his campaign for the 2024 election, where he has promised to strengthen the U.S. economy. He claims that other countries have been taking advantage of the U.S. for many years.

In his letter to Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump thanked Mexico for helping reduce the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl into the U.S. However, he said Mexico has not done enough to stop drug trafficking in North America. In his letter to the European Union, Trump called the U.S. trade deficit a national security threat.

If Trump moves ahead with these tariffs, they could have a big impact on the global economy.
