US President Donald Trump is hosting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at his golf resort in Scotland for talks on their recent bilateral trade deal and the worsening hunger crisis in Gaza. Trump recently announced a significant trade agreement with the European Union, imposing a 15% tariff on EU goods, which might be a point of discussion during the meeting. Trump believes Starmer will be pleased with the trade deal, citing unity between the US and UK.
Starmer had hoped to discuss reducing US steel and aluminum tariffs, but Trump has ruled out any changes, stating the trade deal with Britain is “concluded”. British Business and Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds said the talks offer a chance to advance Britain’s arguments, but no announcements are expected on Monday. Reynolds’ comments suggest that while the meeting might not yield immediate results, it’s an opportunity for both sides to engage in meaningful discussions.
The meeting between Trump and Starmer will take place at Trump’s luxury golf resort in Turnberry, Scotland, before they travel to another estate near Aberdeen. Given the recent trade tensions between the US and EU, with France criticizing the EU’s handling of trade negotiations with the US, this meeting could have significant implications for future trade agreements.
