The Trump administration has announced plans to rescind a crucial finding that greenhouse gas emissions pose a danger to human health, which could effectively dismantle US regulations on climate change. This move would eliminate current limits on pollution from vehicles, power plants, and other sources, and hinder future efforts to combat global warming. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin claims the repeal would save $54 billion annually by removing greenhouse gas standards.

The proposal, which will undergo a public comment period, has sparked outrage from environmental groups. They argue that this decision would spell the end of US action against climate change, allowing industries to pollute more while leaving citizens to deal with the consequences. Abigail Dillen, president of Earthjustice, stated that the EPA’s announcement sends a clear message: “pollute more” to industries and “you’re on your own” to those affected by climate disasters.

The decision is expected to face legal challenges, with many arguing that the EPA has the authority to regulate greenhouse gases. However, Zeldin cited a recent Supreme Court decision reducing federal agencies’ power to interpret laws, claiming the EPA lacks the ability to regulate greenhouse gases. The move has significant implications for the future of climate change regulation in the US, potentially leading to increased pollution and devastating environmental consequences.
