At least 13 people have died and dozens more have been injured following violent protests in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, after the government imposed a sweeping ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X, and YouTube. The demonstrations, largely led by Nepal’s youth identified as “Gen Z,” erupted outside the Parliament building, where protesters clashed with police and army forces responding with tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition.

Protest Details

Thousands gathered to denounce the government’s controversial crackdown, chanting against censorship and corruption. Authorities claim the ban was introduced after the platforms failed to comply with registration requirements, but critics argue it is an attempt to suppress dissent and curtail digital freedoms.

Casualties and Response

Hospital and government sources confirm at least 13 fatalities, with some reports placing the death toll higher. Over 40 people were hospitalized with injuries ranging from gunshot wounds to trauma caused by clashes. The government has imposed curfews in several parts of Kathmandu and deployed the army in an attempt to restore order.

Political Fallout

Facing increasing unrest, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli called an emergency cabinet meeting. The protests have ignited a nationwide debate about freedom of expression and government overreach, with demonstrators demanding a reversal of the social media ban.
