A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot a man during an arrest attempt in a Chicago suburb on Friday. The incident occurred when officers were conducting a vehicle stop targeting Silverio Villegas-Gonzales, an undocumented immigrant with a history of reckless driving.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Villegas-Gonzales resisted arrest and drove his vehicle toward the agents, striking and dragging one ICE officer a significant distance.
Fearing for his life, the ICE officer discharged his firearm, fatally wounding Villegas-Gonzales. Both the suspect and the officer were transported to a hospital; Villegas-Gonzales was pronounced dead, while the officer remains in stable condition despite serious injuries.
The event took place in Franklin Park, a Chicago suburb near O’Hare Airport. Governor JB Pritzker called for transparency and a full investigation into the incident. The FBI and local authorities are involved in the ongoing inquiry. The incident reflects heightened tensions amid intensified immigration enforcement efforts in the Chicago area.
