Chicago – September 13, 2025

In September 2010, Pakistan faced one of the worst natural disasters in its history, as devastating floods displaced millions, leaving families homeless, hungry, and without clean water. At the height of this national tragedy, Hollywood star and UN Special Envoy Angelina Jolie arrived in Pakistan to assist with humanitarian relief efforts.

Jolie visited flood-hit camps, personally meeting victims and documenting the dire situation. In her official report, she revealed that Pakistan’s influential elites often created obstacles, preventing her from directly reaching those in urgent need. Instead of facilitating access to the most vulnerable, officials seemed more concerned with extending social gestures to impress the visiting celebrity.

Jolie recalled being invited by then–Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to an exclusive dinner. Even after her initial refusal, a government plane was dispatched to ensure her attendance, reflecting misplaced priorities during a time when millions required immediate relief and leadership.

Her observations shed light on governance failures, where political prestige took precedence over humanitarian urgency, leaving flood survivors struggling for the attention they desperately deserved.
