Chicago – September 30, 2025

With less than a day left before a possible government shutdown, the fight in Washington shows no sign of ending. Senate Republicans are ready to give Democrats one last chance to support their plan to keep the government funded past midnight. But many lawmakers believe Democrats are not willing to agree.

The main issue is billions of dollars in expanded Affordable Care Act subsidies, also known as Obamacare. Republicans want to pass a simple funding bill with no changes, while Democrats say those health care subsidies must be included. If no deal is reached, this will be the first shutdown of President Donald Trump’s second term.

On Monday, President Trump met with the top leaders from Congress at the White House. The high-stakes meeting ended with no progress. Senate Majority Leader John Thune plans to hold another vote, even though Democrats have already rejected the GOP bill.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the decision is now in Trump’s hands, while Republicans blame Democrats for tying health care demands to government funding.
