Chicago – October 20, 2025
Israel breached the ceasefire by launching strikes on Gaza, killing Palestinian civilians in the latest escalation of violence. The fragile ceasefire, brokered by the United States and effective since October 10, 2025, has been under strain. Israel’s military reported that Hamas militants attacked Israeli troops in the Rafah region, killing two soldiers with gunfire and an anti-tank missile.
In retaliation, the Israeli military conducted a “massive and extensive wave” of airstrikes across Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 Palestinians, including civilians, women, and children.
This incident prompted Israel to suspend humanitarian aid into Gaza “until further notice,” citing Hamas’s breach of the ceasefire. Hamas, however, denied involvement in the Rafah clashes and reaffirmed its commitment to the truce, accusing Israel of fabricating pretexts for the strikes.
Among the dead was a Palestinian family of 11 killed by an Israeli tank shell while inspecting their home in Gaza City, marking the deadliest single breach of the ceasefire so far. Both sides accuse each other of violations, raising concerns about the ceasefire’s stability and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
