North Texas U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett has officially ended weeks of speculation by announcing her campaign for the U.S. Senate, aiming to unseat longtime Republican Senator John Cornyn. Crockett made the announcement Monday in South Dallas, delivering a fiery message about the stakes of the race.
Crockett, now in her second term representing Texas’ 30th congressional district, has risen to national prominence for her sharp criticism of former President Donald Trump. Their ongoing clashes on social media have centered on major policy issues including health care, food assistance, and affordable housing.
At her campaign launch, Crockett said she refuses to play politics safely during what she called a pivotal moment for Texas.
“I could have played it safe,” she said. “But this moment is life or death for Texas. It’s now or never.”
Many Democrats believe the Congresswoman’s confrontations with far-right figures could work to her advantage, especially after recent elections showed voters pulling back from MAGA-aligned candidates. In traditionally conservative areas such as suburban Tarrant and Harris counties, Democratic candidates saw unexpected gains. A Fort Worth special election even pushed a long-held Republican House seat into a January 31 runoff.
Crockett hopes to harness that momentum, positioning herself as a clear alternative to her GOP opponents. She described Cornyn as a career politician who follows Trump’s lead, pointing to his voting history on issues like health care, SNAP benefits, and Social Security.
“We all know Senator John Cornyn doesn’t have the courage to stand up to Trump,” Crockett said. “I do. While small businesses struggle under Trump’s tariffs, Cornyn keeps doing business as usual. I’m done with politics as usual.”
Cornyn recently responded by comparing Crockett to New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, signaling what may become an intense and highly visible Senate race as Texas politics continue to shift.
