Chicago – June 17, 2026
Aisha Wahab has advanced in the special election to fill the remainder of former U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell’s congressional term in California’s 14th District. According to election results reported Tuesday night, Wahab led the field with about 42.5% of the vote. Because no candidate won an outright majority, the top two finishers will move on to a special general election on August 18.
The race was triggered after Swalwell resigned from Congress in April 2026. The district, which covers parts of the East Bay including Fremont, Hayward, and Livermore, is strongly Democratic, making Wahab a significant contender to win the seat.
Wahab, who currently serves in the California State Senate, campaigned heavily on housing affordability and cost-of-living issues. She also previously advanced from the regularly scheduled June primary election for the full congressional term that begins in January 2027.
If she wins the August runoff, Wahab would serve the final weeks of Swalwell’s current term before the winner of the November election takes office for the next full term.
