U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a sharp warning to Canada, threatening to impose 100% tariffs on Canadian imports if Ottawa proceeds with a newly negotiated trade agreement with China.
In a social media post shared on Saturday, Trump criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, accusing him of potentially allowing Canada to become a gateway for Chinese goods entering the United States. Trump stated that if Canada believes it can act as a “drop-off port” for Chinese products destined for the U.S. market, it is “gravely mistaken.”
The warning comes amid Trump’s ongoing tough stance on international trade. Over the past year, he has aggressively pursued trade restrictions and tariffs as part of a broader effort to counter China’s global manufacturing influence.
Earlier this month, Canada finalized a deal with Beijing that would reduce tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. In exchange, China agreed to lower import taxes on Canadian agricultural products, offering relief to Canadian farmers seeking access to Asian markets.
