Chicago – April 19, 2026

The FBI and Justice Department are scrambling to refill their ranks after months of departures left key offices short-staffed and under pressure.

In response, the bureau has turned to social media recruiting, shortened training for some federal transfers and eased requirements for certain support staff seeking agent roles.

Current and former officials warn that the changes may lower standards at a time when both agencies face major national security and criminal justice demands.

The FBI says the moves are meant to modernize hiring and streamline the process, not reduce competency requirements. Still, the staffing crisis has raised fears that experience, judgment and institutional knowledge could be lost as the agencies work to rebuild.
