Chicago – January 25, 2026
Longtime D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton has filed paperwork to terminate her reelection campaign for Congress, marking the end of a storied political career.
The 89-year-old Democrat, who has represented the District of Columbia in the House as a non-voting delegate since 1991, made the filing with the Federal Election Commission on Friday. Norton’s decision comes amid speculation about her health and a competitive primary landscape for the 2026 election.
Norton, a civil rights icon and former chair of the EEOC, has been a fierce advocate for D.C. statehood and federal funding. Her campaign committee reported raising over $200,000 in the last cycle but faced challengers like Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White.
No official statement from Norton was immediately available. The move opens the field in the June 3 Democratic primary.
