Chicago – February 04, 2026

Two leading Democratic senators are sharply criticizing the Trump administration over what they describe as a “favorites-first” approach to tariffs claiming that major companies with close ties to the president are receiving special trade relief while others are left out.

In a letter released publicly on Wednesday, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) and Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland) raised concerns that the administration has been easing certain tariffs through what they call a non-transparent and unfair process. According to the senators, the system appears to reward corporations whose executives are politically aligned with or “cozying up” to President Trump.

The senators argue that the administration’s tariff adjustments are being handled through an “opaque” tariff exclusion process, one that lacks clear public standards and accountability.
They warned that this approach has “opened the door to corruption and economic harm,” suggesting that tariff relief is not being granted based on economic need or national interest but rather on political influence and access.
