K-pop supergroup BTS marked their triumphant return with the largest public concert in South Korean history, drawing up to 260,000 ecstatic fans to Gwanghwamun Square. The free “BTS The Comeback Live: Arirang” event on March 21 celebrated the release of their fifth studio album, Arirang, named after Korea’s iconic folk song and exploring themes of identity and belonging.
After a nearly four-year hiatus for mandatory military service, all seven members—RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—performed 12 songs over one hour, opening with “Body to Body” amid traditional Korean attire and dancers. Directed by Super Bowl veteran Hamish Hamilton, the spectacle featured massive stages, projections on palace walls, and a global Netflix stream to 190 countries, despite RM’s minor ankle injury.
While 22,000 secured seats via lottery, thousands more viewed via screens; actual attendance hit around 104,000 per HYBE estimates. The album smashed records with nearly 4 million first-day sales. Analysts predict BTS’ world tour and comeback could generate $1.93 billion, rivaling Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
