The United States is sharply escalating its trade war with Canada, announcing bans on imports of certain Canadian dairy products, most alcoholic beverages and motorcycles. The new restrictions are scheduled to take effect on September 29.
The move comes just hours after Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods, following earlier American tariffs on Canadian products. Washington has accused Canada of unfair trade practices, particularly in the dairy, alcohol and automotive sectors.
President Donald Trump has also directed the U.S. government to restrict Canadian products from certain long-term federal contracts unless Ottawa provides what Washington calls “full and fair reciprocity.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to reduce his country’s economic dependence on the United States and expand trade with other partners.
The escalating dispute threatens to disrupt one of the world’s largest and most integrated trading relationships, while raising concerns for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border.
