President Donald Trump is pushing to repaint the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House with a so-called “magic paint,” but preservation experts say the plan could damage the historic granite facade. The building’s submitted proposal argues that white paint would improve the structure’s appearance and make maintenance easier, while critics say mineral silicate paint does not properly bond to granite and may worsen staining.
A preservation review cited by CNN says 25 specialists concluded the paint is not suited for granite and would not strengthen the stone or improve durability. The experts also warned that priming the surface could cause permanent damage and make stains more visible than on the current stone.
The Commission of Fine Arts is set to review the proposal on April 16, adding another step to a plan that has already drawn legal and preservation pushback. The debate reflects Trump’s broader effort to reshape the look of federal buildings in Washington.
