Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat after 16 years in power, as the opposition Tisza party secured a landmark victory in Sunday’s parliamentary election.
The result marks a major political shift in Hungary and a setback for one of Europe’s most prominent nationalist leaders, whose influence has also resonated with allies in Washington and Moscow.
Preliminary results showed Péter Magyar’s center-right, pro-EU Tisza party ahead by a wide margin, with reports indicating it won enough seats to shape the next government decisively. Orbán told supporters the result was “painful” but acknowledged it was clear, and he congratulated the winning side.
The outcome is expected to alter Hungary’s stance toward the European Union and reset its domestic political direction.
