Iran has warned of “serious consequences” after a U.S. military blockade on its ports took effect on Monday, sharply escalating tensions in the Gulf. The move, announced after weekend talks failed to produce a deal, applies to ships traveling to or from Iranian ports, while the Strait of Hormuz remains open to non-Iranian traffic, according to U.S. officials.
Tehran denounced the blockade as “illegal” and “piracy,” saying any threat to its ports would trigger retaliation and that no Gulf port would be safe if Iranian shipping is targeted. Iranian officials also warned that foreign military pressure could worsen instability in global energy markets.
The standoff has deepened after several NATO allies, including Britain and France, refused to join the blockade. London said it would not be drawn into the conflict, while Paris said any mission in the waterway would be defensive and launched only after hostilities end.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments, and analysts say disruptions there could push energy prices higher.
