Chicago – June 27, 2026

Iran and the United States traded strikes and sharp recriminations on Saturday, risking a collapse of the fragile interim peace deal that had paused months of wider regional fighting, officials and maritime monitors said.

A tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was hit by a projectile amid exchanges of air and drone strikes, prompting Britain’s maritime agency to warn of threats to commercial shipping in the vital waterway.

Washington said it carried out strikes on Iranian-linked facilities after an attack on a cargo ship, while Tehran described its responses as defensive strikes against US-linked targets and condemned the US action as a violation of the ceasefire.

Bahrain reported drone attacks targeting areas near US forces, and US officials accused Iran of breaching the terms of the truce; Tehran rejected that assertion and called for diplomatic channels to resolve disputes.

International mediators have urged restraint, warning that renewed escalation could derail the nascent talks aimed at a longer-lasting settlement, even as both sides exchange blame and limited military actions continue in the Gulf.
