U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has urged migrants living in the United States under temporary immigration protections to seek permanent legal status if they are eligible or prepare to leave the country. The remarks come as the administration moves to tighten immigration policies and reassess temporary programs that have allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants to live and work in the U.S. legally.
Noem said temporary protections are not intended to provide a permanent pathway to residency and emphasized that individuals without a legal basis to remain should make arrangements to depart voluntarily. The statement is expected to affect migrants covered by programs such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and humanitarian parole. Immigration advocates have expressed concern that ending temporary protections could disrupt families and communities, while administration officials argue the policy reinforces immigration laws and encourages long-term legal solutions for those eligible to remain in the United States.
