Chicago – August 18, 2026

President Donald Trump’s foreign policy is facing renewed scrutiny as tensions emerge over Oman and South Korea. His administration has emphasized pressure, economic leverage and greater burden-sharing from U.S. partners.

With Oman, Washington has objected to arrangements involving Iran and the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Oman, however, has historically played an important mediating role between the United States and Iran. Critics argue that confrontational rhetoric toward Muscat could undermine a potentially valuable diplomatic channel.

In South Korea, Trump has pressed Seoul to contribute more toward the cost of hosting U.S. forces while seeking major Korean investment in the United States. The two countries have reached agreements involving increased investment and defense contributions. At the same time, concerns have emerged over reductions in joint military exercises and their possible impact on deterrence against North Korea.

Trump’s approach has produced measurable economic commitments, but questions remain about whether short-term gains will strengthen or strain America’s long-term alliances.
