Congressional Democrats have launched a formal investigation into the Trump administration’s efforts to deport U.S. military service members and their families, following revelations that immigration authorities have detained more than 50 spouses and parents of active-duty personnel since January 2025.

Investigation Details

More than 60 Democratic lawmakers signed a letter Sunday evening to the Department of Homeland Security, the Defense Department, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, demanding answers about whether the Pentagon and DHS are coordinating to deport military families. The probe is being led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) alongside Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), with support from several House Democrats.

The Associated Press reported last week that at least six interventions have resulted in deportation, with eight people remaining in immigration custody. In their letter, lawmakers stated that these efforts “imperil military readiness, weaken service members’ morale, and betray America’s promises to the people who put their lives on the line for our nation.”

Policy Changes Under Scrutiny

The investigation focuses on the administration’s rollback of longstanding bipartisan protections for military families. In February 2025, the Trump administration announced it would no longer exempt military family members from deportation, and in April rescinded a policy that treated military service as a “significant mitigating factor” in immigration enforcement decisions. Some service members have reportedly requested leave or delayed deployments to care for children following their spouses’ detention.

The agencies have until mid-September to respond to the Democrats’ extensive list of questions.
