Chicago – August 13, 2026

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar has won the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, putting her on course to seek a fifth term in the House.

Omar secured more than 80% of the vote in Tuesday’s primary, according to projections, defeating four challengers. The result gives the incumbent a strong position heading into the November general election.

Omar, a member of the progressive “Squad,” has represented the Minneapolis-area district since 2019. She was first elected after defeating a longtime Democratic incumbent and has won reelection in the heavily Democratic district.

The primary was part of a broader Minnesota election that included competitive races for governor, Senate and other congressional seats. Progressive candidates recorded several notable victories, although the results were mixed across the state.

Omar is expected to face Republican John Nagel in November. If she wins the general election, she would begin a fifth term in Congress.
